Record & listen back

Record up to 30 seconds to check clarity, hiss, distortion or a muffled voice. Your clip remains in this browser tab unless you download it.

Start the microphone to enable recording. Playback will release the live mic to reduce feedback.

Room noise vs voice check

Measure a quiet room first, then speak at your normal distance. Compare the two captured digital signal levels; results are estimates, not calibrated sound-pressure readings.

Privacy first: This tester analyzes microphone input locally with browser APIs. It does not upload audio or recording files. The microphone is released when you stop the test. No account is needed.

Quick setup

How to Test Your Microphone Online

You can check a built-in laptop microphone, a USB mic, a wired headset or a Bluetooth microphone without installing a program. Follow these four steps before a meeting, voice chat, livestream or recording session.

01

Connect your microphone

Plug in your headset or microphone, or pair your Bluetooth device. Use the microphone picker if your device has more than one input.

02

Start the mic test

Press Start Mic Test. When your browser requests microphone access, select Allow. If access is blocked, update site permissions.

03

Speak and check the signal

Talk at a normal volume. Watch the waveform, input meter and live diagnosis. A changing signal means your browser is receiving audio.

04

Record and listen

Record a short clip and play it back to check how you sound. Listening helps identify distortion, hiss and muffling a level meter cannot identify.

What you can check

What Does This Online Mic Test Measure?

Mic Test checks the actual audio signal accessible through your browser. It is a quick way to verify whether sound arrives, whether levels are too low or close to clipping, and which microphone your browser currently uses. These measurements are useful diagnostics, but they do not replace a calibrated audio analyzer.

Live microphone waveform

The wave shape changes when you speak or make a sound. A nearly flat line suggests low or absent input. Large peaks may indicate strong sound or high gain.

RMS level and peak level

RMS shows the average signal strength over a short window. Peak shows the largest captured sample. Both are expressed in dBFS, with 0 dBFS representing the digital ceiling.

Frequency spectrum

The spectrum visualizes the distribution of energy across frequencies. You can compare different mics or check for obvious low-frequency rumble, though it is not a calibrated frequency response test.

Recording and playback

Listen for buzzing, robotic audio, background noise or a distant voice. The browser records only when you press the Record button; no clip is uploaded by this tool.

Room noise comparison

A guided quiet-room reading and voice reading give a rough level difference. Microphone gain and browser audio processing affect these results, so compare readings using the same settings.

Device and browser settings

View the input name, channels and reported sample rate when available. Request echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain control and see what your browser reports.

Reading results

Understanding Microphone Levels and Test Results

Input levels are shown in dBFS (decibels relative to full scale), not dB SPL. In a digital signal, 0 dBFS is the maximum sample level. Negative numbers indicate lower levels. A quiet room, phone microphone and professional USB mic can show different readings depending on gain and processing.

What you seeWhat it may meanWhat to check next
Moving waveform and meterThe browser is receiving a changing audio signal.Record and play a clip to assess clarity.
Flat waveform while speakingThe chosen input may be muted, disconnected or too quiet.Check the selected device, mute switch and operating-system input level.
Meter frequently near 0 dBFSThe digital signal may be overloaded or have little headroom.Reduce microphone gain or move slightly farther away.
Noticeable signal during silenceThe microphone may be picking up room noise, ventilation or electrical hiss.Make a clip, isolate background sounds and compare processing options.
Good meter movement but poor soundThe signal exists, but the recording may have noise or distortion.Use the playback feature and review headset or microphone settings.

The near-clipped frame counter only flags sampled digital peaks close to full scale; it cannot reliably detect all forms of distortion or clipping that occurred before the browser received the audio. The best final check is always listening to an actual sample.

Fix common problems

Mic Not Working? Try These Fixes

1. Allow microphone access

Use the microphone or site-settings icon in your address bar, allow this website to use the mic, then try again. Browser access generally requires a secure HTTPS page. Some in-app browsers restrict mic permissions.

2. Check your system input

On Windows, look under Settings → System → Sound → Input. On macOS, check System Settings → Sound → Input. Select the microphone you intend to use and verify its volume.

3. Check mute, cable and USB port

Headsets sometimes have a physical mute switch or inline control. Reconnect the cable, try another USB port and make sure the connector is fully inserted. Wireless microphones may need to reconnect.

4. Close other audio applications

A meeting app, recording program or system driver can sometimes hold or change the active input. Close other programs using your mic, refresh the page and start a fresh test.

5. Your voice is too quiet

Move closer to the microphone, speak toward its pickup area and check the input gain. If voice processing is cutting off words, compare the test with noise suppression disabled.

6. Mic works here but not in Discord or Zoom

Choose the same input in the calling application and verify the app's own microphone permissions and mute controls. Browser success does not automatically guarantee an app is configured correctly.

Compatibility

Test Laptop, Headset, USB and Mobile Microphones

This microphone tester uses standard web audio and media capture APIs supported by modern versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. It can work on Windows laptops and desktops, Macs, Android devices, iPhones and iPads where the browser exposes a compatible microphone. The precise list of inputs depends on the browser, operating system and available hardware.

Bluetooth headsets: Some devices switch to a voice-call profile when their microphone becomes active, which can make playback sound different from music mode. Phones and tablets: A mobile browser may show fewer input devices and limit which built-in mic can be selected. External USB microphones: Connect the device before testing and choose it in the input selector after permission is granted.

For an extra device check before gaming, you can also use our Gamepad Tester, Controller Button Tester and Connection Stability Tester.

Privacy and accuracy

Is This Microphone Test Private and Accurate?

The testing code runs inside your browser. Live sound is used for on-screen analysis and is not transmitted to a server by the Mic Test tool. When you explicitly record a clip, it stays in the current tab's memory until you clear it, reload the page or download the recording to your device. Access to the microphone requires your browser's permission.

Readings describe the signal received by the browser, which may already have been altered by device drivers or built-in audio processing. This tool does not measure acoustic sound pressure, absolute microphone sensitivity, certified sound quality or true end-to-end call latency. Reported sample rates and processing settings are shown only when the browser provides them.

For more technical background, see the browser microphone permission documentation and MediaRecorder API documentation from MDN.

Frequently asked questions

Mic Test FAQs

How do I know if my microphone is working?

Start the tester, allow access and speak normally. If the waveform and input level respond to your voice, the browser is receiving microphone sound. Record and listen back to check clarity.

Why does my microphone test show no sound?

Check that the correct input is selected and not muted. Review browser microphone permissions and operating-system input settings, reconnect the device and try the test again.

Can I hear my own microphone online?

Yes. Press Record audio after starting the mic, then stop the recording and use the audio player. To reduce feedback, this page releases the live microphone when you play the recorded clip.

Is the microphone test free?

Yes. You can use the microphone check, waveform, spectrum, room-level comparison and recording controls without creating an account or installing software.

Can I test my microphone on a phone?

Yes, on compatible mobile browsers that grant microphone access. Input selection and recording formats can vary between Android and iOS.

Does this tool upload or save my voice?

The Mic Test tool does not upload recorded audio. A clip remains in your browser's temporary memory until you clear it or leave the page. It is saved to your device only if you choose Download recording.

What is a good microphone level?

There is no universal setting for all mics. Aim for clearly audible speech with enough headroom to avoid peaks near 0 dBFS. Check the recording for clipping and background noise instead of relying on a single number.

Why does the browser request microphone permission?

Browsers protect microphone access and require your consent. This test cannot capture a live signal without permission, and access may fail if the page is not served over HTTPS or the browser blocks it.
